The Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn Roe vs. Wade has left many Americans wondering, “Are abortions illegal now in certain states?”
For women experiencing an unexpected pregnancy, understanding the details of the new ruling is crucial. Is abortion still legal in Georgia?
We’ve researched the state laws around the country and compiled the information you need to know.
How Does The Removal Of Roe Affect Abortion Laws?
When the Supreme Court overturned Roe, they did not make abortions illegal nationwide. Instead, the decision gave the states the power and charged their lawmakers to review current permissions and limits on abortions.
Georgia lawmakers have passed the Heartbeat Bill, which allows elective abortions until a fetal heartbeat can be detected via sonogram.
The Heartbeat Bill does protect women in rare situations like rape, incest, and when the mother’s life is at risk. In these special circumstances, abortions may still be obtained in the state of Georgia after a fetal heartbeat is detected.
What About States That Have Banned Abortions?
It’s been highlighted in certain media outlets lately that some states have adopted a full ban on abortions. In reality, no state currently has a total abortion ban.
Some states, like Arkansas, have banned abortions. But in this new legislation, women are still protected from things like ectopic pregnancies and whenever the mother’s life is at risk.
Ectopic Pregnancy
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg begins to develop outside of the uterus. Ectopic pregnancies are not viable, meaning they will naturally end in miscarriage.
Ectopic pregnancies can cause severe internal bleeding if left unchecked by a healthcare professional. If you are recently pregnant, having an ultrasound performed to rule out an ectopic pregnancy could save your life.
