Being pregnant while in an abusive relationship can leave you facing difficult questions about your health, your relationship, and what comes next. If your partner has been controlling, threatening, or hurting you, an unexpected pregnancy may add another layer of uncertainty to an already difficult situation.
You may be wondering how to keep yourself safe, whether you should leave, or who you can trust with what you are experiencing. You may also be questioning whether certain behaviors are actually abusive.
You do not have to figure everything out on your own. Understanding what abuse can look like, protecting your health, and finding safe support can help you take your next step.
Fayette PRC provides free and confidential pregnancy services to help you learn more about your pregnancy and options. We can discuss your specific situation and determine how to help you feel supported.

Abuse Isn’t Always Physical
Abuse can involve much more than physical violence.
A partner may try to control you through threats, intimidation, isolation, monitoring your phone or finances, controlling where you go, or pressuring you about your pregnancy or other decisions.
You may find yourself changing what you say or do because you are afraid of how your partner will react.
You do not have to wait for the situation to become physical before taking your concerns seriously. If someone’s behavior makes you feel controlled, frightened, or unsafe, you deserve support.
Seek Support
Abuse can make you feel isolated, particularly if your partner has tried to distance you from people you trust. Think about someone you could safely talk to. This might be a friend, family member, healthcare provider, counselor, or domestic violence organization.
If your partner monitors your phone or internet activity, consider whether it is safe to seek help on your usual device. If possible, use a device your partner cannot access or reach out when you are somewhere safe.
You do not have to confront your partner or tell them about your plans. Your safety comes first. If you decide you want to leave, consider making a safety plan and choosing a time and place that are as safe as possible.
If you are in immediate danger, call 911. You can also contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) for confidential support and safety planning.
Protect Your Health
Pregnancy is a time when receiving appropriate healthcare is especially important. If your partner has physically hurt you, particularly around your abdomen, or you are experiencing pain, bleeding, dizziness, or other concerning symptoms, seek medical care promptly.
Understanding your pregnancy can also help you make informed decisions about your health and next steps.
An ultrasound can provide information about how far along you are (your pregnancy’s gestational age), the location of the pregnancy, and whether a fetal heartbeat is detected. Fayette PRC provides these services at no cost to you.
