If you’re pregnant—whether it was expected or not—you may be wondering how many ultrasound scans you’ll need. Ultrasound is a valuable tool during pregnancy, especially in the early weeks. It provides important information about your health and the development of the pregnancy.

At Fayette PRC, we offer no-cost ultrasound services to confirm pregnancy and help you take the next steps with confidence.

When Are Ultrasounds Typically Performed?

The number of ultrasounds you may need depends on how far along you are (gestational age), your health history (i.e., diabetes, previous pregnancy complications, etc.), and how the pregnancy progresses.

It’s typical for women to receive two routine scans, but more may be recommended for specific circumstances, especially later in the pregnancy if there are any issues.

First-Trimester Ultrasound

This early ultrasound scan usually takes place around 6-8 weeks of pregnancy. It confirms the pregnancy, checks for a heartbeat, verifies that the pregnancy is in the uterus, and estimates how far along you are. This information is especially important if you are considering abortion, as some methods are only available during the earliest stages of pregnancy.

Mid-Pregnancy Ultrasound

Around 20 weeks, many women receive an anatomy scan. This more detailed ultrasound checks the baby’s growth and development. The sonographer will take pictures of every part of the developing baby’s body. It also gives families the option to learn the baby’s sex, if they choose.

Additional Ultrasounds

Some women may need additional scans if there are signs of complications such as bleeding, slower-than-expected growth, or conditions like high blood pressure or gestational diabetes. These follow-up scans help monitor both maternal and fetal health more closely.

If a pregnant woman has an accident, such as falling down the stairs or having a car crash, an ultrasound will follow to make sure the baby is okay.

Getting the Details You Need

Even if you’re unsure about continuing your pregnancy, an early ultrasound provides key medical information. It can detect signs of miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy, both of which require different medical care.

Fayette PRC offers no-cost early ultrasounds and a welcoming space where you can learn more about your pregnancy and talk through your questions.
